Himachal Pradesh Itinerary: Shimla, Manali & Kasol Road Trip
A complete Himachal itinerary covering Shimla's colonial charm, Manali's snow adventures, and Kasol's backpacker vibe. Perfect 7-day hill station trip plan with travel tips.
Day 1
Tue, Jan 5, 2027
Most visitors arrive via the scenic narrow-gauge "toy train" from Kalka (a UNESCO World Heritage Railway) or by road from Chandigarh (~115km, ~4 hours). January is peak winter in Shimla — expect snow, icy roads, and sub-zero nights; pack heavy woollens and grippy shoes.
The Ridge, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 171001
Shimla's iconic open square and social heart since the colonial era, with sweeping mountain views and the neo-Gothic Christ Church as its backdrop.
The Mall, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 171001, India
Built in 1857, the second-oldest church in North India — its stained-glass windows and Ridge-facing facade are the most photographed landmark in Shimla.
Mall Rd, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India
A pedestrian-only colonial-era shopping street lined with old English-style buildings, cafes, and Himachali handicraft shops — no vehicles allowed, so it's a proper unhurried stroll.
Settle in, and try a hot cup of Himachali kahwa or a plate of siddu (steamed stuffed bread) at one of the cafes on the Mall.
Day 2
Wed, Jan 6, 2027
Jakhu Temple Park, Jakhu, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 171001, India
A hilltop Hanuman temple at Shimla's highest point (2,455m), with a 108-foot statue visible from across town — the walk up (or a short cab ride) rewards with the best panoramic view in Shimla. Watch your belongings around the resident langur monkeys.
Kufri, Himachal Pradesh 171012, India
A small hill station with Himalayan Nature Park and, in winter, pony rides and snow-sledging on the slopes above the village — a proper snow-play stop before the bigger adventures in Manali.
The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (the former Viceregal Lodge) offers guided interior tours of one of the grandest colonial buildings in India — worth it if you have an extra hour before dinner, easy to skip if not.
Day 3
Thu, Jan 7, 2027
Shimla to Manali is around 250km via Mandi — roughly 8-9 hours by road in winter conditions, longer if it has snowed. Start early, and build in a lunch stop around the halfway point at Mandi.
Settle in, and save sightseeing for tomorrow — a long mountain drive is enough for one day.
Day 4
Fri, Jan 8, 2027
Siyal Rd, Siyal, Manali, Himachal Pradesh 175131, India
A striking wooden temple built in 1553 inside a cedar forest, dedicated to a figure from the Mahabharata — one of the oldest and most atmospheric sights in Manali.
Solang Valley, Himachal Pradesh 175103, India
Manali's main snow-sports base — skiing, snow scooters, and a ropeway cable car in winter, with the Solang glacier and surrounding peaks as a backdrop. Gear rental and instructors are available on site.
Day 5
Sat, Jan 9, 2027
Old Manali, Manali, Himachal Pradesh 175131, India
A hidden gem just across the Manalsu river from the main town — narrow lanes, Himachali wood-and-stone houses, and the backpacker cafe scene that gives the area its laid-back reputation. Noticeably quieter and more local than central Manali. Drifters' Cafe on Manu Temple Road is a good lunch stop, with riverside seating over the Manalsu.
Vashist, Manali, Himachal Pradesh 175103, India
Natural sulfur hot springs beside a centuries-old stone temple — a proper soak after a cold day, and a genuine local ritual rather than a tourist add-on.
Rohtang Pass itself is closed to tourist traffic through the winter (heavy snow, special permits only when open) — Solang Valley, which you've already covered, is the right winter substitute.
Day 6
Sun, Jan 10, 2027
Kasol, Himachal Pradesh 175105, India
The Parvati Valley's backpacker hub — Israeli-influenced cafes, riverside guesthouses, and a noticeably different, more bohemian energy than Shimla or Manali.
Hari Har Ghat, Manikaran Rd, Manikaran, Himachal Pradesh 175105, India
A revered Sikh gurudwara built beside naturally boiling hot springs, where langar meals are cooked using the geothermal heat — one of the valley's most striking cultural sights.
Day 7
Mon, Jan 11, 2027
Kasol has no airport of its own — most travelers fly out of Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali) Airport, about 30km away, rather than backtracking to Shimla.
Vill Chalal, Kasol, Himachal Pradesh 175105, India
A hidden gem reachable only on foot — a short riverside and forest walk (no road access) to a tiny village with sweeping valley views, popular with long-stay backpackers rather than day-trippers.
Build in at least 3 hours before your flight for check-in — add extra buffer if the Kasol–Bhuntar road has been affected by recent snowfall.
