Kerala Backwaters Itinerary: Munnar, Alleppey & Kochi in 6 Days
"God's Own Country" — houseboat stays in Alleppey backwaters, tea gardens in Munnar, and Fort Kochi heritage. Full 6-day Kerala itinerary with best travel season.
Day 1
Wed, Jan 20, 2027
Kochi's international airport is about 40km from Fort Kochi — allow 1–1.5 hours for the transfer. January is Kerala's best season: dry, warm days (28-32°C) and cool evenings — light cottons plus one light layer for the evening.
Fort Vypin, Puthuvype, Kochi, Keralam 682001, India
Giant cantilevered fishing nets said to have been introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan — best seen (and photographed) around sunset when the fishermen work them.
St Francis Church Rd, Fort Kochi, Kochi, Keralam 682001, India
The oldest European-built church in India (1503) — Vasco da Gama was originally buried here before his remains were moved to Lisbon.
Mattancherry, Kochi, Keralam 682002, India
16th-century, Portuguese-built and later Dutch-renovated — famous for its detailed Hindu mythological murals, among the best-preserved examples of Kerala mural art anywhere.
KB Jacob Rd, Fort Nagar, Fort Kochi, Kochi, Keralam 682001, India
A classical Kerala dance-drama with elaborate makeup and costumes — most venues run a pre-show demonstration of the makeup process, worth arriving early for.
Synagogue Ln, Jew Town, Mattancherry, Kochi, Keralam 682002, India
Antique shops and spice warehouses in what was once Kochi's Jewish quarter, anchored by the 16th-century Paradesi Synagogue — the Commonwealth's oldest active one.
Day 2
Thu, Jan 21, 2027
Kochi to Munnar is about 130km, roughly 4 hours through winding ghat roads — an early start means arriving with enough daylight for a first tea-garden stop.
KDHP House, NH 49, Nullatanni, Munnar, Keralam 685612, India
A working tea-processing exhibit inside the tea gardens themselves — walk through rows of neatly clipped tea bushes before seeing how the leaf becomes the cup, with tastings at the end.
Munnar sits at over 1,500m — evenings are properly cool even in January, so keep a warm layer handy.
Day 3
Fri, Jan 22, 2027
Kannan Devan Hills, Keralam 685612, India
Home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat) and rolling grassland views up to Anamudi, South India's highest peak — go early, before the park's shuttle queues build up.
Mattupatty Dam, Mattupetty, Keralam 685616, India
A scenic reservoir ringed by tea-covered hills — boating is available on the lake, and it's a popular stop for the view alone.
Munnar - Top Station Hwy, Keralam 685616, India
A quieter lakeside stop just past Mattupetty, named for the valley's natural echo — a good lunch-break spot away from the bigger crowds.
Munnar, Kottagudi, Tamil Nadu 625582, India
A hidden gem relative to the closer sights — Munnar's highest viewpoint (over 1,700m), looking straight down into Tamil Nadu's Theni plains. Fewer visitors make it here simply because of the extra distance.
Day 4
Sat, Jan 23, 2027
Munnar to Alleppey is about 160km, roughly 4.5-5 hours. Most houseboats have a fixed check-in window (typically 12–1pm), so aim to leave with that in mind.
Settle onto your kettuvallam (traditional rice-barge houseboat) — most itineraries include all meals cooked fresh on board by the boat's own crew.
Boat Jetty Rd, Alappuzha, Keralam, India
A slow drift through a network of canals, paddy fields and coconut-lined villages — Kerala's signature experience, best enjoyed at the unhurried pace the houseboat sets rather than rushed.
Day 5
Sun, Jan 24, 2027
Boat Jetty Rd, Alappuzha, Keralam, India
Many houseboats stop for a guided walk through a canal-side village — toddy tapping, coir-making and a working Chinese-net fishing spot are common sights along the way.
The rest of today is deliberately unplanned — this is the one day built around simply being on the water, not sightseeing.
Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha, Keralam
Punnamada Lake — home to the famous Nehru Trophy snake-boat race every August — is a common late-afternoon stretch for houseboats. Golden light over the water is the highlight of the whole cruise.
Day 6
Mon, Jan 25, 2027
SH40, Mararikkulam South, Cherthala, Keralam 688523, India
A hidden-gem fishing-village beach, quieter and far less developed than Kovalam or Varkala — a peaceful last stop before heading to the airport.
Build in at least 3 hours before your flight for check-in — Kochi airport gets busy with the winter tourist season in full swing through January.
